The Water Is Still There

THE DEVOTION

Isaac did not begin his assignment by pretending nothing valuable existed before him. He returned to the wells his father had dug. The water was not gone; access had been obstructed. The Philistines had filled the openings with earth, but dirt in the mouth of a well does not cancel water beneath it.

That distinction matters. Some believers abandon proven revelation because its container appears old, neglected, or buried beneath years of cultural debris. We confuse blocked access with exhausted truth. Then we rush to manufacture something novel while standing over an inheritance that still carries life.

Isaac’s work was both conservative and creative. He conserved the source, but he reopened access for his own generation. He honored the names Abraham had given the wells, yet he put his own hands to the shovel. Inheritance is not passive possession. Every generation must remove whatever has accumulated between people and living water—careless tradition, shallow presentation, spiritual laziness, technological fear, and language that no longer reaches the hearer.

This is the assignment of faithful innovation: not to improve God’s truth, but to clear the passage through which truth travels. Screens, sound, imagery, podcasts, and digital campuses are not the water. They are tools for reopening the well. The vessel may change; the source must not.

Do not discard what God preserved simply because someone buried it. Dig with discernment. Name the obstruction. Remove it patiently. Beneath the dirt, the water is still there.
