When LGBTQ Identity Meets Christian Identity

THE DEVOTION
Labels can serve a purpose. They may describe attraction, distress, history, community, or the questions a person is trying to understand. The church should not pretend those experiences are imaginary. Yet Christianity asks a deeper question: who possesses final authority to name the life? Paul answers that the believer’s life is hidden with Christ in God.
This truth confronts every identity, not only LGBTQ identity. Career, marriage, race, politics, wounds, wealth, ministry titles, and sexual desire can all become rival names. They may describe something important without becoming Lord. Christ does not ask us to deny reality; He asks every reality to take its proper place beneath Him.
For a person who experiences same-sex attraction or gender-related distress, faithful discipleship should never require a fictional story. No one should be pressured to claim that feelings vanished, treated as a church project, or reduced to one issue. Honest struggle can exist alongside sincere faith. Temptation is not identical to surrender, and a costly obedience unseen by crowds is precious before God.
The church must carry more than a prohibition. If biblical faithfulness calls an unmarried believer to chastity, the body of Christ must offer meaningful friendship, spiritual family, shared tables, service, prayer, and patient companionship. A command delivered without community can become a burden placed on someone’s shoulders by people unwilling to lift a finger to help.
Bring every label into the light of Christ. Keep what tells the truth about your experience, reject what demands disobedience, and refuse every name that claims more authority than the One who died and rose for you. Your struggle is not your Savior. Your desire is not your Lord. Your life is hidden with Christ—and Christ will have the final word.

Practice interpreting before teaching
- Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
- Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
- Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
- Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
- Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.
A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.
