You Keep Praying for Rain and Ignoring the Cloud

Word Studya roar, a rushing, a tumultuous sound of abundance — the noise of a great multitude or a coming storm. Elijah heard the hamon of rain during a drought, before a single drop fell. Faith responds to the sound God gives, not the sight the eye demands.
THE DEVOTION
There had been no rain for three and a half years. 🌧️ The ground was cracked, the brooks were dust, and the sky was the same merciless blue it had been for over a thousand days. And in the middle of that drought, Elijah tells the king to go eat and drink, because he hears the hamon — the roar of rain. There was no cloud yet. There was only a sound only faith could hear.
Notice the order. Elijah declares the rain, then he climbs the mountain to pray for it. He announces what he has not yet seen, then goes to labor for it in prayer. Seven times he sends his servant to look, and six times the report comes back empty. Six times. 🙏🏿 Most of us quit at report number two.
On the seventh look, the servant sees it — a cloud the size of a man's hand rising out of the sea. That's it. That's the whole answer at first: a smudge on the horizon you could blot out with your thumb. But Elijah does not despise it, because he knows the God who sends a fist-sized cloud is about to send a flood. The Sugar-Free Gospel™ says it plain: God rarely sends the downpour before He sends the smudge.
So stop demanding the whole storm before you'll believe. ⚡ You keep praying for rain and ignoring the cloud, waiting for something dramatic while God is already moving in something small. Learn to hear the sound of abundance in the middle of the drought — and to celebrate a cloud the size of a fist.

Practice interpreting before teaching
- Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
- Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
- Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
- Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
- Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.
A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.
