Isaiah 58 confronts fasting used as religious display while workers are oppressed and neighbors remain hungry. God joins devotion to justice: loosen unjust bonds, share bread, provide shelter, and stop hiding from human need.
Fasting cannot purchase God’s favor or substitute for ethical action. Nor is food abstinence appropriate for every body. People living with diabetes, those who are pregnant, and people with an eating-disorder history, medications, or other health concerns should seek clinical guidance or choose a safe non-food fast; dry fasting can cause dehydration.
Let the discipline expose what controls you and free resources for love. A truthful fast changes schedules, spending, speech, power, and treatment of workers—not merely the contents of a plate.
