Bring the Tithe Into Its Covenant Context

THE WORD

Malachi speaks to postexilic Israel about covenant tithes brought to the storehouse for temple service and communal provision. The ‘windows of heaven’ language belongs to Israel’s covenant blessing and curse; it is not a guaranteed Christian formula for wealth.

The New Testament calls believers to generous, willing, proportionate giving—not under compulsion—and commands care for the poor and accountability among leaders. Giving does not purchase healing, protection, promotion, or a financial return from God.

Churches should teach stewardship transparently, protect vulnerable households from pressure, publish responsible financial practices, and use resources for mission, justice, care, and community. Those in need may be recipients of generosity rather than targets of fundraising.
