Paul rejects the idea that abundant grace makes continued sin insignificant. Union with Christ means the believer’s old allegiance has been judged at the cross. Grace is not divine permission to preserve the bondage from which Christ came to free us.
Yet dying to sin does not mean a believer will never struggle, relapse, need treatment, or require sustained accountability. Romans 6 announces a changed dominion, not instant human perfection. Shame says the struggle proves grace failed; presumption says the struggle does not matter. The gospel says sin is no longer lord, so bring every struggle into the light and learn to walk in newness of life.
True grace trains desire, changes access, repairs harm, and creates practices that support holiness. Do not weaponize mercy against obedience, and do not weaponize holiness against wounded people. Receive grace as pardon and transforming power.
