Obey God Above Human Authority—with Discernment

THE WORD

The apostles answered authorities who had forbidden them to testify about the risen Jesus: ‘We must obey God rather than men.’ Their civil disobedience answered a clear conflict between a divine commission and a human command.

The verse does not turn every private impression, political preference, or leader’s demand into God’s voice. Scripture, the character of Christ, wise community, facts, conscience, law, and consequences all require careful discernment.

When obedience requires resistance, Christians should tell the truth, accept accountability, protect others from needless risk, use lawful remedies where possible, and reject violence or self-glorifying defiance.

Is the conflict truly between God’s clear command and human authority, or between human preferences competing for divine endorsement?

I will obey God above human authority with biblical clarity, humility, nonviolence, and willingness to accept responsibility.
