Paul commands believers to live peaceably so far as it depends on them and to refuse personal vengeance. The qualifying phrase matters. Peace requires our faithfulness, but reconciliation cannot be manufactured by one person while another remains dangerous, dishonest, or unrepentant.
Leaving room for God’s judgment does not forbid reporting crime, seeking legal protection, establishing boundaries, pursuing church discipline, or protecting vulnerable people. Justice and revenge are not identical. Revenge seeks personal domination; justice seeks truthful accountability and the protection of neighbor under legitimate processes.
Release the fantasy that your retaliation can heal the wound. Tell the truth, pursue safety, make appropriate reports, seek wise counsel, and refuse to become governed by hatred. Forgiveness can surrender personal vengeance even while trust remains unrestored and consequences remain necessary.
