Forgiveness Releases Vengeance, Not Justice
Forgiveness refuses personal revenge while truth, boundaries, restitution, and protection may still be required.

FOUNDATIONAL SCRIPTURE · ESV
“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”Matthew 6:12 (ESV)
WISDOM WHISPERS™
“Grace can release the right to retaliate without erasing the truth, reopening unsafe access, or cancelling another person’s accountability.”— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.
Word StudyAphiēmi means to release, send away, or forgive. In debt language it pictures relinquishing a claim, while the wider biblical witness still makes room for truth and justice.
THE DEVOTION
Jesus teaches disciples to ask for forgiveness while becoming people who forgive. The debt image takes wrongdoing seriously: something real has been damaged. Forgiveness is not pretending the harm was small, denying memory, or forcing the wounded person to speak peace before safety and truth have been established.
To forgive is to release personal vengeance into God’s hands. It refuses to let hatred become the continuing ruler of the injured life. That release may be repeated as grief returns; it is often a process of prayer, wise counsel, lament, and the steady decision not to repay evil with evil.
Forgiveness is not identical to reconciliation. Reconciliation requires repentance, truth, changed behavior, and rebuilt trust from more than one party. A person may forgive while maintaining distance, declining contact, reporting abuse, pursuing legal protection, requesting restitution, or accepting that the former relationship cannot safely resume.
Nor does forgiveness eliminate consequences. God’s mercy does not make justice unnecessary. Churches must never pressure survivors to protect reputations, meet privately with offenders, or return to danger. Accountability can serve the neighbor, restrain further harm, and create space for genuine repentance.
Bring the ledger honestly before God. Name the debt without letting it define your future. Release revenge, receive the care you need, and pursue proportionate justice through trustworthy channels. Grace does not call evil good. It breaks evil’s claim to reproduce itself through your retaliation.
