WISDOM WHISPERS™
“The servants did not understand the miracle; they simply made room for it through obedience.”— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.
Word StudyTo do, make, carry out, or put an instruction into practice. At Cana, trust became visible when ordinary servants acted on Jesus’ direction before they could see the outcome.
THE DEVOTION
The servants at Cana were not given an explanation. They were given an instruction: fill the jars. The containers were large, the work was ordinary, and nothing about hauling water looked like the beginning of a miracle. Yet obedience made room for what understanding could not predict.
Mary’s counsel was simple: do whatever Jesus tells you. The Greek verb poieō means to do or carry out. Biblical faith does not stop at agreement; it moves truth into practice. The servants could have demanded details, but instead they filled the jars to the brim.
Obedience is not reckless impulse. We test every claimed instruction by Scripture, the character of Christ, wise counsel, and faithful context. But once God’s direction is clear, endless delay can become fear wearing the clothes of discernment.
You may be waiting to understand how the water will become wine while Christ is asking whether you will fill the jar. The next faithful act may look small, repetitive, or unrelated to the result you desire. Do it with integrity. Outcomes belong to God; obedience belongs to us.
