Pride Nearly Kept Naaman on the Riverbank

Naaman arrived with rank, gifts, expectations, and a carefully imagined healing scene. Elisha’s simple instruction offended him because the Jordan looked ordinary and the prophet refused to perform according to his status. Pride was exposed when grace declined to flatter importance.

The Hebrew verb ṭābal means to dip or immerse. Naaman’s servants helped him reconsider; humility listened to counsel and obeyed the instruction actually given. His cleansing was a particular act of God in Israel’s history, not a universal procedure for curing disease.

This passage must never be used to promise that a prescribed ritual guarantees healing or to shame people whose illness continues. Prayer and appropriate medical evaluation, medication, therapy, rehabilitation, and supportive care can walk together. Faith does not require refusing the ordinary means through which help may come.

The confrontation is with pride, not with sick people. Are we rejecting wise counsel because it feels too ordinary, comes through an unexpected person, or fails to honor our preferred image? Humility can pray for healing, receive care, ask questions, and entrust the outcome to God without presumption.
