THE DEVOTION
Beloved, everything obstructing your progress is not demonic. Some doors remain closed because your ego is standing in the doorway.
We routinely ask God to remove enemies, change circumstances, correct people, and clear pathways. Yet we rarely ask the more dangerous question: ‘Lord, is the problem me?’
John the Baptist understood what many believers resist: Christ cannot fully govern what self is still determined to control. ‘He must increase, but I must decrease’ is not religious modesty. It is spiritual mathematics. When Christ increases, pride must decrease. When obedience increases, personal preference must decrease. When divine purpose increases, the appetite for applause must decrease.
The Greek word translated ‘decrease’ is elattoō—to make less, reduce in prominence, or become inferior in position. John was not declaring himself worthless. He was placing himself in the correct position. Humility does not mean denying your value; it means refusing to make your value the center of God’s will.
Some people cannot move forward because everything must include their opinion, protect their image, satisfy their feelings, or preserve their control. They call it discernment, but it is often disguised domination. They claim they are waiting on God while demanding that God’s answer accommodate their ego.
Sugar-free truth: You cannot follow Christ while insisting upon remaining the central figure in every equation. God’s purpose does not require your importance—it requires your obedience.
Taking yourself out of the equation does not mean becoming passive, voiceless, or invisible. It means removing pride, resentment, insecurity, self-importance, and the need to control the outcome. It means accepting that God can be right when you do not understand Him, and His direction can be good when it does not flatter you.
Stop rebuking every resistance as warfare. Some resistance is the friction created by your refusal to decrease. The next step may not require another prophecy, confirmation, or conversation. It may require surrender.
Christ must increase. Self must decrease. Only then can purpose move forward.

Practice interpreting before teaching
- Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
- Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
- Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
- Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
- Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.
A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.
