Repeated Refusal Hardens the Heart

Word StudyChāzaq can mean to be strong, firm, or hardened. Exodus uses hardening language with different subjects, showing a complex interaction of Pharaoh’s repeated refusals and God’s judicial confirmation—not a simple wax-and-clay formula.
THE DEVOTION
The saying about one sun melting wax and hardening clay is memorable, but it is not a verse from Exodus. Pharaoh’s story is more complex: at points Pharaoh hardens his own heart, at points his heart is hardened, and at points God confirms him in the course he has chosen.
The narrative warns about repeated refusal before power. Pharaoh receives signs, counsel, consequences, and opportunities, yet repeatedly returns to exploitation. Hardness is formed as mercy is treated as permission to resume harm.
We should not label every trauma response, disability, doubt, or emotional numbness a hard heart. People may need safety, treatment, time, and patient care. Biblical hardness is stubborn moral resistance to known truth, especially when power protects self-interest at another person’s expense.
Respond while correction can still be received. Tell the truth, release what you are controlling, make restitution, and welcome accountable counsel. Grace remains an open door, but repeated refusal trains the feet to walk past it.
