Pride Was a Sin Long Before It Was a Parade

Long before modern movements used pride as a public slogan, Scripture diagnosed pride as the heart lifting itself against God. The biblical concern is not confidence, gratitude, resilience, or refusing humiliation. It is self-exaltation—the creature claiming the right to define good, dismiss correction, and occupy the throne.

Proverbs says ‘everyone’ who is arrogant in heart. That word removes every safe spectator’s seat. Pride lives in pulpits, politics, families, activism, scholarship, wealth, poverty, masculinity, beauty, victimhood, and religious certainty. It can march in a street, sit on a church board, or kneel publicly while secretly worshiping applause.

Christians therefore cannot use this text merely to condemn LGBTQ neighbors while excusing arrogance, adultery, exploitation, racism, greed, cruelty, and celebrity culture within the church. Selective outrage is pride wearing doctrinal clothing. Judgment begins with the household of God, and repentance begins with the person holding the verse.

At the same time, cultural pressure cannot revise Christian conviction. We may disagree with claims about identity, sexuality, marriage, or human flourishing. But disagreement must remain truthful, lawful, nonviolent, and dignifying. Mockery does not defend holiness. Threats do not advance the gospel. Jesus calls us to enemy-love, neighbor-love, and courageous witness.

Humility is not silence about every moral claim, and confidence is not automatically pride. The issue is posture beneath God. Humble conviction remains teachable, admits its own sin, refuses dishonest shortcuts, and seeks the neighbor’s good. Pride can whisper while appearing gentle, or shout while quoting Scripture. Its defining feature is not volume but self-exaltation that will not bow.

Ask where your heart has become unteachable. What correction makes you immediately defensive? Whose dignity becomes easy to ignore? Lay down both shame and superiority at the cross. Humility is not thinking you have no worth; it is receiving your worth from God without needing to stand above someone else.
