Word Studymanna. Exodus 16 connects the name with Israel’s question about the unfamiliar provision. Daily gathering had an explicit Sabbath exception: the sixth-day portion was kept overnight.
THE DEVOTION
Exodus 16:19–20 records the spoilage of manna kept contrary to instruction. But verses 22–30 command a double portion on the sixth day, which remains good for the Sabbath. The full account teaches obedience in both gathering and resting.
The passage is not a universal condemnation of savings, stored food, or careful provision for a household. Neither does it say yesterday’s Scripture, prayer, or grace loses its value. Israel is learning to receive the Lord’s provision according to His particular instructions.
As an application, return to God in present trust while remembering past faithfulness. Make room for work and rest. Do not turn daily dependence into a demand for constant religious activity that ignores the very Sabbath provision the story includes.

Practice interpreting before teaching
- Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
- Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
- Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
- Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
- Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.
A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.
