The Prophet Ate the Scroll Before He Preached It

Ezekiel was not invited to sample a religious idea. God commanded him to eat the scroll—to receive a message of lamentation, mourning, and woe before speaking it to Israel. The sweetness did not make the message easy. It testified that the word came from the God whose truth is good even when it exposes rebellion.

Teachers, parents, pastors, and disciples can become skilled at handling Scripture for other people while resisting its authority over themselves. Study matters. Context matters. Preparation matters. Yet information becomes dangerous when it supplies a platform without producing repentance, humility, and obedience in the person who carries it.

This passage does not teach that every messenger must have perfected a truth before speaking it. No preacher stands above the Word, and wounded people can still testify faithfully. It does teach that we may not use proclamation as a hiding place from transformation. The first hearer of the sermon is always the one preparing to deliver it.

Eat the scroll slowly. Read beyond the sentence that serves your point. Let difficult texts correct your assumptions. Invite accountable believers to examine both your interpretation and your conduct. When Scripture comforts you, receive it. When it confronts you, do not edit away the edge.

Then speak—not as an owner of divine truth, but as a steward already under its judgment and mercy. The authority belongs to God’s Word. The credibility of the messenger grows when the life shows signs of having been fed by the same truth being served to others.
