Word StudyPerispaō means to be pulled away or distracted in different directions. Jesus addresses anxious distraction and comparison; He does not condemn hospitality or faithful service itself.

THE DEVOTION

Martha welcomed Jesus into her home, and hospitality was honorable work. The problem was not that she served while Mary listened. Luke says Martha had become distracted and pulled in different directions by much serving.

Jesus addressed her with tenderness: ‘Martha, Martha.’ He named anxiety before correcting comparison. Mary’s place at His feet also affirmed a woman as a disciple receiving instruction—an important dignity in the world of the text.

Presence and service are not enemies. Listening should form the way we serve, and service can express what we have heard. The danger appears when activity becomes resentment, identity, avoidance, or a demand that everyone prove love in the same way.

Pause long enough for Christ to reorder the room within you. Then return to work without contempt for your limits or jealousy toward another person’s assignment. The seated heart can carry a serving towel without letting the towel become its master.

🙏🏿 LET US GO INTO THE THRONE ROOM OF GRACE AND MERCY.™

Prayer

Jesus, meet us in the room where service has become anxiety. Quiet comparison, honor faithful labor, and teach us to receive Your Word before activity defines us. Form in us a seated heart and willing hands.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

BENEDICTION

May Christ give you attentive presence within faithful service and freedom from anxious comparison.
