The Spirit Makes Rivers Flow

THE DEVOTION

At the climax of the feast, Jesus invited thirsty people to come to Him and drink. The promise begins with need and reception. John then interprets the living water: Jesus was speaking about the Spirit, whom believers would receive after Jesus was glorified.

The river is not a technique for increasing productivity. It is not proof that a faithful person never becomes tired, needs boundaries, or asks for help. The Spirit is personal divine presence, not an energy source leaders may exploit to keep volunteers pouring beyond healthy limits.

Living water flows toward witness, holiness, justice, comfort, community, and love. It can appear through proclamation, hospitality, patient listening, courageous truth, material generosity, artistic work, and ordinary faithfulness. The stream carries Christ’s character; volume without love is not spiritual abundance.

Burnout may involve many causes: unreasonable demands, trauma, illness, financial pressure, caregiving, isolation, or habits that need correction. Prayer is essential, and so are rest, shared responsibility, professional care, Sabbath, and leadership structures that refuse to consume people in God’s name.

Come thirsty. Receive again the Spirit’s sustaining presence through prayer, Scripture, sacrament, community, and obedient trust. Then serve within your actual calling and capacity. You are a channel, not the source. The river belongs to God, and grace does not require one human vessel to irrigate the whole field alone.
