BIBLE JOURNEY · JEREMIAH

The Fountain and the Broken Cisterns

STUDY 101Jeremiah 2:13 · ESV

FOUNDATIONAL READING · ESV

Jeremiah 2:13

Read the complete passage slowly before entering the reflection. Let the biblical text govern every application that follows.

THE WORD

Jeremiah accuses Judah of two evils: abandoning the LORD, the fountain of living waters, and digging cracked cisterns that cannot hold water. Idolatry exchanged the living God for sources incapable of bearing ultimate trust.

Created goods are not therefore enemies. Relationships, therapy, medicine, work, education, recreation, and community can be gifts through which God provides care. They become cisterns when treated as ultimate saviors or used to replace truth and obedience.

Return to the Fountain without scorning the channels He may use. Let worship reorder desire, let Scripture test loyalties, and receive wise human help as gift rather than god.

CONFRONTATION QUESTION

Which good or harmful thing have you asked to carry the ultimate weight that belongs only to God?

FAITH RESPONSE

I return to the living God and will receive created gifts gratefully without making them my savior.

🙏🏿 LET US GO INTO THE THRONE ROOM OF GRACE AND MERCY.™

Prayer

Fountain of living waters, expose every false refuge. Reorder our loves and teach us to receive Your care through Scripture, community, treatment, work, and rest without idolatry.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT

Truth must become practice.

Name one cistern you have treated as ultimate. Set one boundary and renew one practice that directs trust toward God.
