You Are Working for the Wrong Audience and It Is Making You Resentful

Paul wrote these words originally to slaves — people with zero social standing, zero external recognition, zero upward mobility, and zero recourse when their work went unacknowledged or their treatment was unjust. He did not tell them to wait for better circumstances before working with excellence. He told them to work heartily — from the soul, with full energy, with complete investment — right now, in the exact situation they were in, not for the audience in front of them but for the Lord seated at the right hand of the Father. If Paul's theology of work could sustain a first-century slave, it can absolutely reach into your office cubicle, your ministry team, your household, and your volunteer schedule. The principle is universal: whatever you do, the audience is God — not your boss, not your congregation, not your family, not your social media followers.

Here is where the resentment enters: when you are working for men — for human recognition, human appreciation, human compensation, human approval — and men fail to deliver, the motivation collapses. The boss is unfair. The church does not acknowledge the thousands of hours of unpaid service. The spouse takes the domestic sacrifice for granted. The congregation grows under your pastoral care and attributes it to the platform rather than the prayer. And when the human audience withholds what you were counting on them to provide, the resentment builds — because you invested far more than the return you received. But this resentment is the diagnostic indicator of a misaligned audience. You were working for men, and men disappointed you. The solution is not to work less hard — it is to redirect the performance to the right spectator.

"From the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward." Every unseen effort. Every unacknowledged sacrifice. Every excellent piece of work that no human eye noticed or human mouth praised. Every late night of prayer for a congregation that never knew you were up. Every kitchen cleaned that no one thanked you for. Every patient, faithful, behind-the-scenes act of service offered in obscurity. God saw it. He logged it. And the inheritance — the eternal reward — is being prepared proportionally. The Lord Christ is watching every effort that no human has noticed, and He is a more accurate and more generous auditor than any human employer, any church board, any spouse, or any supervisor could ever be. Redirect your performance. Work heartily — for Him. And let the peace of knowing He sees be sufficient for today.
