Your Theology Has Been Hijacked and You Do Not Even Know It

THE WORD

"See to it" — this is a command of personal vigilance. Blepete in the Greek: look, watch, be on guard, take personal responsibility for what is entering your mind and reshaping your convictions. Paul is not talking about external enemies assaulting the gates of your theology with obvious hostility. He is describing something far more dangerous and far more common: the slow, undetected erosion of biblically rooted convictions through the infiltration of philosophy that sounds reasonable, tradition that feels comfortable, and elemental spirits of the world that mirror the cultural consensus so precisely that their origin goes unquestioned. Most believers who have been theologically captured were not taken by force. They were taken by slow, sustained exposure to ideas dressed in the language of wisdom, progress, compassion, and intellectual sophistication.

The philosophy Paul warns against does not typically arrive announcing itself as anti-Christ. It arrives as therapeutic wisdom: "God just wants you to be happy." It arrives as progressive compassion: "A loving God would never judge." It arrives as cultural consensus: "Times have changed and the church needs to evolve." It arrives as intellectual sophistication: "That passage needs to be read in its cultural context" — which functions as a permanent escape hatch from the authority of any inconvenient text. These ideas do not always come from outside the church. Often they come from pulpits, from podcasts, from best-selling books, from social media accounts with blue checkmarks and millions of followers. The test is always — and only — this: is it according to Christ? Does it align with His revealed Word, His established character, and His non-negotiable commands? Or does it subtly, persistently undermine His authority while using His language?

Many believers in the twenty-first century are captive and do not know they have been taken. They believe what they believe about sexuality because culture told them so. They believe what they believe about hell because discomfort shaped the doctrine. They believe what they believe about grace because someone divorced it from obedience and they found the result enormously appealing. They have been taken captive — not by the atheist down the street, but by the philosophy woven through their social media feed, their peer group, their preferred podcasts, and their own desire to be considered reasonable by the world around them. Paul's command is to SEE TO IT. Take personal responsibility for the doctrine that is shaping you. Test everything against Christ. Not against culture. Not against consensus. Not against what feels loving. Against Christ — His Word, His character, His commands. Guard your theology like your life depends on it. Because the lives of those you influence do.
