He Called You by the Name You Were Ashamed Of
Heaven does not read your résumé. It reads your name. God finds the ones the world writes off.

FOUNDATIONAL SCRIPTURE · ESV
“And the angel of the LORD found her... and said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?””Genesis 16:7-8 (ESV)
WISDOM WHISPERS™
“Heaven does not read your résumé. It reads your name. God finds the ones the world writes off.”— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.
Word StudySeeing, a looking. Hagar names God 'El Roi' — the God who sees me. A foreign slave woman, cast into the desert, becomes the first person in all of Scripture to give God a name. The seen one names the Seer.
THE DEVOTION
Hagar is a nobody by every social measure of her day — a foreign slave, a woman, pregnant, running from an abusive household into a desert to die. 🏜️ And it is to her, in that exact ditch of shame and rejection, that the angel of the LORD comes. Not to the patriarch's tent. To the runaway slave beside a spring in the wilderness.
And what does the angel call her? By her name. “Hagar.” He knows her. In a world where she was defined only by her function — servant of Sarai — God addresses her personally. He does not call her by her shame or her status. He calls her by name and asks the two questions that reorder a lost life: where have you come from, and where are you going? 🕊️
So Hagar does something no patriarch had yet done. She names God. El Roi — the God who sees me. The Sugar-Free Gospel™ will not let you miss this: the first theologian to name the character of God in Scripture was a discarded slave woman. Heaven's attention does not track our hierarchies.
You think God overlooked you because everyone else did. 🙏🏿 But heaven does not read your résumé — it reads your name. The God who found a runaway slave in a desert knows exactly where you are and exactly what you are called. You are not invisible. You are seen.
🙏🏿 LET US GO INTO THE THRONE ROOM OF GRACE AND MERCY.™
