Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17 (ESV)

WISDOM WHISPERS™

Faithful friendship can refine character through honest contact, but biblical correction never baptizes cruelty, domination, or abuse.
— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.
חָדַדchadad

Word StudyChadad means to sharpen or make keen. Proverbs uses the compact image of iron sharpening iron to describe the formative influence of one person upon another.

THE DEVOTION

Proverbs observes that people shape one another as iron gives an edge to iron. The verse does not say that every healthy relationship must be harsh or that sparks are proof of spiritual growth.

Correction can create discomfort because truth exposes habits and motives. Yet wise sharpening is purposeful, proportionate, mutual, and governed by love. It does not humiliate, threaten, isolate, control, or demand access beyond healthy boundaries.

Some relationships require distance rather than more friction. Abuse is not discipleship. Safety planning, pastoral accountability, professional care, and lawful protection can be faithful responses when someone repeatedly causes harm.

Welcome trustworthy truth and offer it gently. Ask permission, speak specifically, listen humbly, and remain correctable yourself. The goal is not sparks. The goal is a life made more useful for love, justice, wisdom, and service.

🙏🏿 LET US GO INTO THE THRONE ROOM OF GRACE AND MERCY.™

Prayer

Father, give us friendships marked by truth, humility, consent, and love. Protect us from cruelty disguised as correction and from defensiveness that refuses wisdom. Make us safe enough to sharpen and humble enough to be sharpened.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

BENEDICTION

May God surround you with truthful friends and make every correction serve love rather than harm.
