Some Doors Only Open From Your Knees

FOUNDATIONAL SCRIPTURE · ESV

And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

ἀγωνίαagonia

Word StudyAgony — the intense straining struggle of an athlete before a contest, wrestling and contending. Luke uses this word of Christ in the garden. Surrender was not the absence of struggle; it was the destination He reached through it.

THE DEVOTION

We flatten Gethsemane into a serene moment of acceptance, but the Greek will not allow it. 🔥 Christ was in agonia — the straining, sweating struggle of a wrestler. He asked, honestly and with everything in Him, for the cup to pass. Surrender was not the absence of the struggle. It was the destination He reached by going through the struggle, not around it.

And notice His posture. He fell on His face. The Son of God, in the hardest hour of eternity, went lower than standing, lower than kneeling — face to the ground. 🙏🏿 Some doors in the spiritual life will not open from a standing position. They open only from the dirt, from the place where you have finally run out of your own strength and can do nothing but yield.

The turning point of the whole gospel hangs on five words: not as I will. Jesus did not pretend He wanted the cross. He wanted the cup to pass. But He wanted the Father's will more than He wanted His own comfort — and that is the wrestling every believer must eventually enter.

So stop negotiating from your feet and start surrendering from the ground. The Sugar-Free Gospel™ says it without softening: you keep asking God to open a door while standing in your own strength. Some doors only open from your knees. Get low, and mean it.

🙏🏿 LET US GO INTO THE THRONE ROOM OF GRACE AND MERCY.™

Prayer

Father, teach us the surrender of Gethsemane — to ask honestly, then to yield completely. Bring us low enough to say 'not my will, but Yours,' and to mean it all the way to the ground. When our strength runs out, meet us in the dirt. And open the doors that only ever open from our knees.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
